ABOUT THE PROJECT

The project „Our City – Our Decision” aims to empower children from a disadvantaged community of Bucharest, in relation to the future of the neighborhood they live in and the city they are part of. It also aims at creating solidarity and partnership between future planners / future architects and the dwellers of disadvantaged areas, in order to create pro-social and sustainable urban spaces.

From the 1st of March 2009 till 30 June 2009, Komunitas team will involve 30 pupils from the ghetto-neighboring School no. 136 and 15 Architecture students in an experience of participative democracy and urban intervention – which will be used both as non-formal education method for civic education and as social solidarity catalyser.

Through exploration and play, the pupils will learn about their city and their neighborhood, about how to analyze and plan improvements of the public spaces they use, about their role in the creation of the city’s future. Working together in mixed team with the pupils, the students will develop the social conscience of their future profession and will become open to the principles of integrated urban development. We will use one innovative method for non-formal civic education and for bringing people together: the thematic urban walks.

The results of the activities will be presented to the public in the frame of a final open-exhibition – in itself one of the project’s results. The empowering but also solidarity message „our city – our decision” will be transmitted to other young people and specialists. By the end of the project, the participants will be ready to assume an active role as citizens of the European future cities.
