ABOUT THE PROJECT

The  National Conference of Urban Education was held on the 9-10 of December 2011 in Bucharest, at the University of Architecture and Urbanism „Ion Mincu”, organized by Komunitas with the help of the Association for Urban Transition(ATU).

This conference represented the release of an innovating concept, that will be at the base of an optional discipline for high school students and marked a key moment in the long term strategy of Komunitas Association; the strategy promotes urban education as a mix of different elements from many other disciplines like: urban anthropology, visual education, urban planning, urban activism.

After days and nights of working to organize the event, after months of writing and rewriting, we launched during the first day of the Conference the Urban Education Guide, a type of publication that appeared for the first time in Romania. Using this Guide, we will develop the future Handbook for Urban Education for high school students. The guide was given for free to all attending the Conference. Around 200 people participated during the 2nd day of the conference: people from all over the country and from Bucharest. In the 2nd day of the conference were presented the following issuese: different methods of urban education, new ways of interacting with the public space through urban interventions and civic activism, initiatives and experiments of participatory urbanism. The presentations were done by a series of NGOs, experts and informal groups. We believe that this Conference was one of the first attempts to bring together groups and individuals interested in the fields presented above.

With this occasion, we hope to build the foundation of a future network of people, groups and NGOs interested in participatory planning, in urban interventions of public space and in an alternative use of the cities. Very good news was the fact that some partnerships were created between the groups attending the conference, immediately after it was closed. People from Bucharest and Timisoara already visited Cluj in the frame of a work meeting on the topic of participatory urbanism, that took place some days after the conference.

Even if this event had behind it years of work through projects and experiments in schools and high-schools in Bucharest, we know there still is a long way to go. The National Conference for Urban Education became an important point on the big map of this innovative field that is still at it’s beginnings in Romania.
