ABOUT THE PROJECT
Within the “Closer to the future” urban education project, pupils from “Ion Neculce” National High School from Bucharest came up with the idea of building a few birdhouses which would afterwards be placed in various parks throughout Bucharest. All said and done. In partnership with students from the Faculty of Landscaping in Bucharest (within the University of Agronomic Sciences), the teenagers designed and built the houses and then, together with their younger colleagues from School no. 136, painted and decorated the objects they had made.
What followed was to obtainin the necessary authorizations (yes, you do need an authorization to place a birdhouse in a tree!) and placing the houses in the trees, one of the most fun moments of the intervention.
Subsequently, the youth made up a route of the houses placed in different spots within the city and, based on this, Ana Lemnaru, our go-to illustrator, created a postcard showing all the routes, which all the participants in the project received, while also being asked to forward it to friends from other cities or countries.
Throughout the year of activity, “Closer to the future” project has promoted the concept of urban intervention and we have made it our goal for this type of interventions to happen not only at a theoretical level, but also at a practical one.
The practical results of the experiments within this educational project were a series of urban furniture objects placed in various spots around the city and built with the participation of teenagers and children involved in the project: birdhouses, a wooden house for the children of School no. 136 and a wooden bench which was part of a larger scale intervention called “Urban Glade” (on an empty lot in the Unirii-Izvor area from Bucharest)
A number of the houses can still be admired at present time, especially in Tineretului Park.
